About Us:
In 2022 my family had just moved and I was a part-time student and needed things to do besides schoolwork. Both online research and advice from my mother suggested that I start some household hobbies, one recommendation was crochet. I had a tiny bit of experience with that craft and so decided to pick it up again in May of that year.
Within months I learned to make many things, such as granny squares, flowers, fingerless gloves, and chapel veils. Then I found amigurumi, or the art of crocheting stuffed animals, and was eager to develop my hobby further.
It was slow going and I had a lot to learn but by the next year I knew I wanted to do something more with my hobby. By that time I was also familiar with a number of independent small businesses through YouTube and my local farmers' curb market.
By following these businesses, I learned that starting a business is possible for anyone and I began that journey, which eventually culminated in establishing Quirky Qreations Crochet.
Sustainably Made:
When I just started out and was researching crochet, I found that the most popular yarns and stuffing materials are made of synthetic fibers, mainly acrylic and polyester.
Essentially made of plastic, these fibers can leach microplastics into our water (One study for example: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2020.115745 there are a multitude of other studies on this phenomenon) and by extension into our bodies.
Remarkably, these fibers are still the most commonly used and available options!
I was shocked to see that even yarns designed for baby toys and garments are primarily acrylic or polyester!
Then I decided that if I crocheted items, as far as possible, I would avoid synthetic fibers.
As such, I only use either cotton or wool yarns and lambswool stuffing in the creations I sell.
